BLIC SCIENCE WEDNESDAYS

Published on October 1st, 2018

The most dynamic, fun and effective way to discover and learn about Biology, genomics, evolution, DNA, microorganisms, and biodiversity.

For curious minds from 12 to 18 years old interested in discovering or enhancing their interest in life sciences.

“Every Wednesday” October-December  18:30 h Barcelona Learning Innovation Center and La Ciència Al Teu Món, will bring participants to experience hands-on activities in the areas of genomics, biodiversity, DNA, and other evolution concepts.

OCTOBER 03th

FROM GENOTYPE TO PHENOTYPE
Molecular processes that shape our functioning. What the DNA is, how it is structured, how information is stored, how does it change and how do you interpret genetic code.

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with The Evolutionary and Functional Genomics Lab, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF).

OCTOBER 10th
UNRAVELING THE KIT OF THE MULTICELLULAR LIFE

What is a unicellular organism? Discover the evolutionary advantages that the transition from unicellular to multicellular organism brought to life on earth.

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with The Evolutionary and Functional Genomics Lab, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF).

OCTOBER 17th
METAMORPHOSIS AND CRYPTIC SPECIES

Metamorphosis: Every species has its own metamorphosis process, human species too. Discover the advantages of individual change and development. Cryptic Species: Identifying species through their genetic barcode.

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with The Evolutionary and Functional Genomics Lab, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF).

OCTOBER 24th
MELANOGASTER, CATCH THE FLY! How organisms adapt to the environment.

Mutations, transposable elements, adaptation, bioinformatics, and genomic sequencing techniques. Connected with the research of the European network of researchers DrosEU (droseu.net)

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with The Evolutionary and Functional Genomics Lab, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF).

OCTOBER 31th
“SEADANCE, KEEP THE RHYTHM!”
Interact with microorganisms; discover their functions and how diversity brings equilibrium to maritime ecosystems.

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with Esther Garcés, Marine Science Institutes (ICM-CSIC)

NOVEMBER 7TH
ORIGIN, DIVERSITY, AND EVOLUTION OF THE HOMINIDS, DO WE COME FROM THE APE OR NOT?

An opportunity to know our most important ancestors, and discover the correct path along evolution. We will introduce concepts like the phylogenetic tree, comparative genomics, the idea of “Gene flow” and the importance of the study of the genomes of the Big Apes

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with The Evolutionary and Functional Genomics Lab, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF).

NOVEMBER 14TH
THE POWERS OF EVOLUTION
Introduction to Populations Genomics and the historical migratory routes of the human genome. The founder effect, evolutionary forces and how genetic variability is distributed.

Facilitator: La Ciència Al Teu Món in collaboration with The Evolutionary and Functional Genomics Lab, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF).
